1933-34 National Chicle Sky Birds
The 1933 & 1934 National Chicle Sky Birds Sets (R136) contains 108 cards, which measure 2 5/8" x 2 7/8". Issued by the National Chicle Co. of Cambridge, Mass, the colorful cards Sky Birds cards depict famous pilots, pioneers of aviation, and aircraft from the early years of flight.
The 1933 National Chicle Sky Birds, featured World War I fighter pilots, are numbered 1 to 24. The 1934 National Chicle Sky Birds cards start at #25 and go to card #108. National Chicle's original plan in 1934 was to again issue 24 cards, but increased the set size due its popularity. As a result, cards #25 to #48 originally stated that they were part of "a series of 48 cards", which was changed to "a series of 144 cards" in a later printing. This minor variation is generally ignored by collectors.
The most popular card in the 1933-34 Sky Birds set is #36 Charles Lindbergh, followed by cards: #48 Amelia Earhart, #49 Orville Wright, #32 James Doolittle and #23 The Red Baron.
